Earthquake in Afghanistan

On 8 October 2005, a major earthquake struck Pakistan. It occurred at 08:52:37am according to the Pakistan Standard Time. It measured a magnitude of 7.6. It is called the 'Kashmir earthquake' as it affected the Pakistani Administered Kashmir and at Muzaffarabad.

This earthquake happened because of the collision of the Eurasian plate and the Indian plate. It was so grave because of severe upthrust and poor construction. The site of the earthquake was at a depth of 26 kilometers below the Earth's surface.

It was reported that an estimated 75,000 people died, 128,000 injured and 219,000 houses destroyed. The damages incurred are over 5 billion US dollars.

To help the flow of humanitarian and medical aid, 5 crossing points were opened between India and Pakistan. The government also helped in medical supplies. Not only that, the New World Hope Organisation distributed necessities like food to 900 families, water, clothes and more to the people affected. People from other parts of the world donated money too.

Personally, I think everyone should have prepared a ready-bag because no one can predict exactly when natural disasters may happen. People should also ensure that the foundation of buildings are strong the residence have to move out of disaster-prone areas. It is sad that the physical environment can have such a big impact on the human environment and vice-versa but I am glad that the government has took notice and help the people.
